What is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system and affects up to 4 times as many women as men. With Multiple Sclerosis, the body’s immune cells attack the myelin sheaths protecting the nerves. When the myelin sheath is no longer present, the nerves can experience deterioration and permanent damage. Some people may be only mildly affected. Others may lose the ability to see clearly, write, speak, or walk. Bowel and bladder function can also be affected. Early symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis can include vision problems, trouble walking, and tingling feelings. Up to 1 million people in the US are living with MS.

How Multiple Sclerosis is Managed Through Novella Infusion Therapy

Treatment for moderate to severe Multiple Sclerosis focuses on slowing the progression of the disease and managing symptoms. Patients can treat their MS through physical therapy, injectable medications, oral medications, and infusion treatments. Many MS patients prefer infusion therapy at an outpatient facility like Novella Infusion because IV therapy distributes the medication quickly into the patient’s bloodstream, leading to faster and longer lasting symptom relief than other methods of treatment.

What to Expect at my Multiple Sclerosis Infusion

MS infusions at Novella begin when a nurse inserts a very thin catheter into one of the patient’s veins. The nurse will then use this IV line to connect the patient to the selected MS medication. Depending on the medication, the IV process can take up to several hours. During this time the on-site Novella Nurse Practitioner will check in chairside to make sure the patient is comfortable and not experiencing unnecessary side effects.
