What is Psoriasis (PsO)?

Psoriasis is a chronic disease in which the immune system becomes overactive, causing skin cells to multiply too quickly. Patches of skin become scaly and inflamed, most often on the scalp, elbows, or knees, but other parts of the body can be affected as well. These distinct dry, scaly skin patches, often referred to as plaques, can be itchy and painful. Psoriasis’s cause is not well understood, but flare ups can develop due to a trigger like stress or an infection and can negatively affect the patient’s life both physically and psychologically. The most common form of psoriasis, plaque psoriasis, affects up to 8 million people in the US.

How Psoriasis is Managed Through Novella Infusion Therapy

Plaque psoriasis symptoms, like other autoimmune diseases, can be managed through topical creams, oral medications or infusion treatments. For moderate to severe cases of psoriasis, Novella Infusion centers can administer medication via a catheter that drips the medication directly into the patient’s blood stream, or via injection, usually into the thigh or abdomen. Depending on the therapy, patients can see clearer skin within several months, with many seeing results sooner.

What to Expect at my Psoriasis Treatment

At Novella Infusion, our onsite nurse practitioners can treat psoriasis using infusions or a subcutaneous injection. The biologic medication dosage is determined using the body weight of the patient at the time of dosage. When the patient receives an IV, a single IV dose will be administered over a period of about two hours. Subcutaneous injection appointments will be shorter, and the medication is administered through an injection to the thigh or abdomen. The Novella Infusion Nurse Practitioner overseeing treatment will watch for signs of allergic reaction.
