What is Severe Asthma?

Asthma is a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, a whistling sound (wheezing) when you breathe out, and shortness of breath. For some people, asthma is a minor nuisance. For others, it can be a major problem that interferes with daily activities and may lead to a life-threatening asthma attack. About 5-10% of asthma sufferers have a severe form of this condition.

How Severe Asthma is Managed at Novella Infusion centers?

Asthma treatment plans vary based on the patient’s age and symptoms. Many patients with episodic mild to moderate symptoms, will use inhalers that deliver medicine directly into the airway when symptoms cause shortness of breath. In other cases, a physician may prescribe medicines that can be injected into the vein or under the skin. These biologic injections or infusion treatments can only be safely administered in a facility like Novella Infusion centers under the supervision of an onsite nurse practitioner. Novella Infusion’s IV and injection treatments for severe asthma can improve breathing and lung function and help prevent against future asthmatic attacks.

What to Expect at my Novella Infusion center Asthma Treatment

Whether receiving treatment via infusion or injection, an appointment to treat severe asthma at a Novella infusion center is relatively short (around 30 minutes). If receiving treatment via infusion, a Novella Infusion professional will sanitize a thin needle, attached to a catheter and medication, and then insert the needle into the patient’s vein. The patient is then monitored while the medication is administered. When receiving a subcutaneous injection at Novella Infusion, a severe asthma patient would receive their injection via the arm, abdomen or thigh. After the medication is administered, the needle is withdrawn and sterile gauze is placed over the injection site. The patient is released after the Nurse Practitioner confirms that the treatment has caused no adverse effects to the patient.
